Timbergreen forestry tour  page 5

This valley has quite a history....            moonshining, counterfeiting, drug running....  and severe high grading.  This timber was the worst of all back in 1973, you could hardly walk through the valley at all due to logging slash and dead timber.  I have tended the few good trees that survived the slaughter and the valley has now regenerated with a nice variety of hardwoods.  This 19" dbh cherry and the huge 36"+ elm behind it are two of the most impressive trees in the hollow  New trails now make access very easy, so this forest is now quite productive.  Our best basswood is in this valley also.

Another old pasture behind the old Soeldner Farm is now a thriving young walnut stand.  This opening has seeded in with a nice variety of trees, though walnut is the dominant species.  This area gets attention    every two years to thin and prune the quickly growing saplings and poles.  Regular tending maintains Full Vigor throughout the life of a tree.  Time to climb again....
